You're not comparing fractional CFO services because you're curious about the concept. You're comparing them because something in the business needs a different kind of attention: cash that doesn't behave the way revenue suggests it should, a decision you don't want to make alone, or a board pack that keeps raising questions no one in the room can answer with confidence.

Once you start looking, you'll find a handful of firms using similar language: senior expertise, without the cost of a full time hire. What the marketing rarely spells out is that "fractional CFO" actually describes a few genuinely different models, and the model matters as much as the person behind it. Here's a plain look at how Scale Suite, CFO On-Call and The CFO Centre structure their services, and where Breeze Advisory fits alongside them.

## Why the model behind the CFO matters more than the name

Most fractional CFO providers fall into one of three shapes. A network model matches you to one of a large pool of CFOs, with a bigger organisation behind them. A team based model gives you a full outsourced finance function, from bookkeeping through to strategy, delivered by several people rather than one. A single embedded model gives you one senior person who works with your business over time and knows it properly.

None of these is automatically the right answer. A network or team model can offer more bench depth and cover for absences. A single embedded model offers continuity: the person in your leadership meetings and board meetings this quarter is the same person who was there last quarter, and the one who'll be there next quarter. The trade off only matters to you, but it's worth knowing which model you're actually buying before you sign anything.

## Scale Suite

Scale Suite runs a team based model rather than a single dedicated CFO. You get access to a broader team covering bookkeeping, payroll, BAS lodgement and strategic oversight, with the company saying it can respond the same day. They advertise a starting price "from $1,500 a month" and say the model typically brings 40 to 60 percent lower finance overhead than a full time hire, a comparison that's their own claim, not one we've independently verified. Scale Suite says it works with businesses from startup stage through to $30 million plus in revenue, positions itself as CA led with Big 4 backgrounds, and offers no lock in contracts with a 30 day money back guarantee. It's worth a look if you want a full outsourced finance function rather than one senior relationship, and you're comfortable with a team structure rather than a single person carrying continuity.

## CFO On-Call

CFO On-Call works through what it calls CFO partners: senior people who work with your business remotely and also mentor your internal finance staff, rather than replacing them. The company says its model typically runs 60 to 80 percent cheaper than a permanent CFO hire once salary, super and on costs are factored in, again a figure from their own marketing. Engagements run on retainer, usually one to eight days a month, following a set path: a discovery call, a 90 day action plan, then a regular monthly cadence with quarterly strategy reviews. CFO On-Call targets businesses roughly $2 million to $50 million in turnover. It's a reasonable fit if you want a defined, structured onboarding process and you're comfortable with a lighter, more occasional time commitment from your CFO.

## The CFO Centre

The CFO Centre is the largest and most established name on this list, built on a global network it says includes more than 750 CFOs. You're matched to an individual CFO based on your sector and stage, and the company emphasises access to that wider network and a dedicated regional support team behind your CFO. They describe their people as being in the "top 1 percent of CFO talent" and, like the others, offer no long term lock in. The CFO Centre works with businesses from around $2 million in revenue through to established firms preparing for sale or a major transition. The trade off with any large network model is worth asking about directly: how much of that network's depth actually shows up in your specific engagement, versus the one CFO you're assigned.

## Where Breeze Advisory fits

Breeze works differently to all three, by design rather than by scale. We stay deliberately small: every client gets a dedicated CFO who knows the business properly and stays with you, not a rotation through a larger bench. Small isn't a limitation here, it's the point. It means every relationship gets real time and attention instead of being managed around capacity.

Breeze works with Australian and New Zealand businesses roughly $2 million to $30 million in revenue, plus pre-revenue founders who want the finance function built properly from the start, often as their first dedicated finance hire of any kind.

Engagement typically starts at a minimum of two days a month, enough to be in the room for the decisions that matter, not just reviewing a report after the fact. That commitment flexes up as the business does. Once a business genuinely needs two to three days a week of senior financial leadership, the maths starts to favour a full-time hire over a fractional one, and we'll say so directly rather than stretching an engagement past the point it still makes sense.

In one recent engagement, gross profit grew from $1.23 million to $1.60 million, an increase of almost 30%, in nine months. Not from more reporting, but from understanding what was actually driving performance, changing the operating structure, and putting clearer financial discipline around decision-making.

## How to actually choose

Ignore the pitch decks for a minute and ask each firm three practical questions. Who is actually in my leadership meetings and board meetings for the big decisions, by name? What happens if that person is unavailable, on leave, or moves on? And how much of my monthly fee goes to strategic thinking, versus bookkeeping and admin? The answers will tell you more about fit than any comparison table, including this one.

If you're not sure yet whether you need embedded CFO support or just a clearer picture of where things stand, the [Financial Health Audit](https://breezeadvisory.com.au/services/financial-health-audit) is a good place to start: a structured review of your numbers and a clear plan, with no assumption you need anything more from us afterward.
