# How to Choose a Fractional CFO for Business Growth

Most founders don't set out to become their own CFO. It happens gradually: you approve the spend because no one else will, you question the margin because the number looks wrong, you carry the consequence when the call goes bad, all without anyone occupying the space between the numbers and the decision. By the time you're comparing fractional CFO providers, you've usually been doing that job alone for a while.

## Why Price and Hours Are the Wrong Starting Point

Which is why most comparisons default to the wrong question. They compare price and hours, because those are the easiest things to put in a spreadsheet. What they don't tell you is whether the person you're hiring will actually step into that space, or just hand you a better-formatted version of what you already have.

At Breeze Advisory, the engagements that work aren't the ones where the CFO knows finance best. They're the ones where the CFO gets close enough to the decision to be useful before it's made, not after. A monthly report on cash flow doesn't tell you whether you can afford to hire. A conversation, at the point you're deciding, does.

## Three Questions Worth Asking Before You Sign Anything

So if you're in that comparison process, three things are worth asking that don't show up on a features list. Does this person sit in the room for the decision itself, the pricing call, the hiring call, the "can we afford this" call, or do they hand you numbers and leave the room? Do they ask questions outside the P&L, about the team, the pricing, the client who got a discount nobody signed off on, or do they stop at forecasting and reporting? And what do they do when the honest answer is uncomfortable? Ask that one directly, before you sign anything.

## What a Comparison Table Can't Tell You

None of this shows up on a comparison table. Price and hours are real constraints, worth weighing, but they're the easiest thing to compare and the least predictive of whether the relationship actually works. A cheaper CFO who never gets into the room costs more than the invoice, in decisions made without the right person in it.

If you're weighing that decision now and want a second read on what you're looking at, that's a conversation Bree Taylor, our founder, is always glad to have.
